Homemade “Nutri-Grain” Bars

I used to love Nutri-Grain bars, pre-celiac. I miss having something easy to grab for breakfast in the morning, that I actually like. I have tried all the GF cereal bars and while they are okay, they are not the same. I found this recipe and WOW! They taste just like I remember Nutri-Grain bars tasting! For the preserves, I used the last of my homemade raspberry preserves, but I think these would be great with any flavor jam or preserves…maybe even apple or pumpkin butter! Kellogg’s doesn’t offer this many options! 😉

Homemade Nutri-Grain Bars

1 box Betty Crocker Gluten Free Yellow Cake Mix

3/4 cup butter (I used Smart Balance)

2 1/2 cups Oats (I used Gluten-Free Oats)

12 ounces Preserves or Jam

1 Tbs. Water

  • Preheat oven to 375° F.
  • Melt butter or butter substitute.
  • Combine cake mix (just the powdered mix), and the oats in a large bowl; stir in the melted butter until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Measure half of this mixture into a greased 9 x 13 pan. Press into pan to cover the bottom.
  • Combine preserves and water; spoon over crumb mixture in pan and spread evenly.
  • Cover with remaining crumb mixture.
  • Pat firmly to make top even.
  • Bake for 20 – 25 minutes, until top is lightly browned.
  • Cool completely before cutting into bars.

  1. On my way to try this! Will report back 🙂

    • Please do Tia! I never know if it is just "me" that thinks a recipe is a genuine "clone" of a gluten product!! 😉

I haven't looked at this post for a long time and just noticed that I did not link to the original recipe source, oops! I will try to find it and update with the link.

  2. Heidi

I tried this recipe today for the 2nd time and it came out good. I was little short of butter , so its a bit dry. Tastewise its yum.

    Keep up the good work.

    Thanks

    Niv

  3. HI Heidi!!!

I am SO EXCITED that I found you!! You have made me realize that all the foods that my son LOVES can be made GF! I just made these and they taste so yummy but can I freeze them? Thanks so much for what you do!

    Casandera

    • Hi Casandera!!!!

I am SO HAPPY you found me too!!! 😀

And yes….JUST SAY YES!!! The day I made gluten-free puff pastry (about a year ago), was the day I knew we could do ANYTHING! 😀

As for freezing the "Nutri-Grain" bars, that is a very good question. I am going to take a guess here (I haven't made these since last November) and say YES they will probably work just fine because the recipe doesn't call for any ingredient that I have not successfully frozen before.

I think I will have to try and make these again this week (I rarely make recipes twice, since I am always looking for new blog material). 😉

      xo,
      Heidi

  4. Heidi…

Is the something else that I can use besides the oats? I used GF oats and after eating the bars ( which we loved..my husband almost ate the whole dish full) we figured out oats are not something our bodies like  so I was hoping you might have an alternative? Thanks so much! Casandera

    • Casandera,

I just tried making the Nutri-Grain bars with Pocono buckwheat cereal and it didn't work out so well (too crunchy). When I get some time, I am going to try with Quinoa Flakes to see how that works and I will let you know. I'm really not sure what else to try??

  5. OMGosh! I am sooooo glad that I just googled Gluten Free NutriGrain bars and found your blog! I am getting ready to start GF with my 3 year old and NutriGrain bars are her very very favorite snack/breakfast food in the whole world. I was so sad I was going to have to tell her no more. This is going to make all of us so much happier! I cant wait to try these out!! YAY! 🙂 You made my day!
