Green Beaver Gluten Free Personal Care Products (and a Giveaway!)

I am very excited to share some fabulous gluten free personal care products from Green Beaver with you today.  Green Beaver is a Canadian Company that believes mother nature is fully capable of helping us to take care of ourselves, which is why they rely on pure natural ingredients when formulating their products.

When I was first diagnosed with celiac disease 6 years ago, I was told repeatedly by my physician and and other reputable sources that even if haircare and other cosmetics contained gluten, I didn’t need to worry about it because one, the gluten protein is too large to pass through the skin and two, a celiac would need to ingest the protein in order for it to cause intestinal damage.  The only exceptions were lip and oral products (like toothpaste and mouthwash) since the likelihood of some getting in your mouth is more than probable. According to Cynthia Kupper, RD and Executive Director of the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America, a woman “eats” 6 pounds of lipstick in her lifetime (Personal Care Products: Do You Need To Worry About Gluten).

While I’m not one to argue with the experts (afterall, I’m just a celiac patient and not a scientist), I began taking a closer look at my personal care products about a year ago when my celiac blood panel kept coming back positive despite a strict gluten free diet.  I was alarmed at how many of my hair care products contained wheat protein and oat ingredients and I began to ponder how much shampoo landed in my mouth during a shower.  I also wondered how much gluten stayed behind on my hands and was then transferred to the food I inevitably picked up with my hands to eat.

Ultimately, I decided to go with the “better safe than sorry” approach and even though products labeled “gluten free” do come with a higher price tag, the peace of mind is worth it to me, especially if it saves me money in the long run by eliminating the need for expensive medical tests to figure out why I’m having ongoing health issues.

Dr. Vikki Petersen brings up several good points in the following video that you might also want to consider (Dr. Vikki also happens to be one of my personal doctors):

A few months ago I received a gaggle of complimentary samples, courtesy of Green Beaver and we love them for many reasons:

Green Beaver products are Certified Organic which means no pesticides or GMO’s.  To read more on why Green Beaver chooses to be certified organic, click here.

Green Beaver also doesn’t use the following ingredients in their products: 1,4-dioxane, Synthetic Fragrances or Perfume, Benzoyl Peroxide, Synthetic Pigments or Colors, Mineral Oil, Petroluem-Mineral Oil in Gel Form, Parabens, Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Propolyne Glycol or Butylene Glycol, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES), Sunscreen Chemicals (like Avobenzone, Benzophenones, Octylethoxycinnamate, PABA), Nanoparticles, Talc, Triclosan, Phthalates, MEA (Monoethanolamine), DEA (Diethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine), Cocamide, Formaldehyde or Formaldehyde Releasers, Phenoxyethanol, DEET, Silicone, or Lanolin.  Click here to read about the safety concerns regarding these ingredients.

Now for a quick rundown of the Green Beaver Gluten Free Products we sampled:

Toothpaste

Green Beaver Toothpaste comes in 5 flavors (click each individual link for ingredient information): Green Apple, Zesty Orange, Frosty Mint, Cilantro Mint and Star Anise and all are fluoride-free* and triclosan-free*.  The toothpastes contain plant-based cleansers instead of harsh foaming agents such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulphate (SLES).  Natural xylitol, lemon and tea tree extract help to ensure your teeth stay clean and your mouth fresh.  Mineral silica and calcium carbonate will whiten teeth naturally.

We sampled the Frosty Mint and the Zesty Orange and my kids like both of them, although zesty orange is their favorite and they’re excited to try the Green Apple next time.

*Dr. Vikki has written some eye opening posts on triclosan and flouride and I highly encourage you to read them:

Green Beaver Jr.

From the Green Beaver website:

“Pure, gentle and certified organic Green beaver Jr is specially formulated for children’s delicate skin using the mildest plant-based cleansers. Contains select natural ingredients including Canadian berries and carrot oil to help nourish, hydrate and protect their skin and hair.  The line includes (click the links for individual product ingredients): Shampoo, Conditioning Detangler Spray, Body Wash, Bubble Bath, Lip Balm and Hand Soap.”

My kids loved the bright colors of the bottles and the light berry scent of the products.  All of the Green Beaver Jr. bottles (except for the bubble bath) come with a kid-friendly, easy to use (and product saving) pump dispenser.  One pump of the shampoo is more than enough to fully clean my boys’ hair.  We’ve been using the Green Beaver Jr. products for nearly 3 months now and are just now getting close to needing a refill, which makes the $9.99 price tag all the more reasonable to me.  While we didn’t try the lip balm, I will definitely order some in the near future, our hot, dry New Mexico climate demands a good lip balm!

  2. I actually "believe" I have a reaction to mascara that is not gluten free. My eyes will get incredibly itchy and irritated until I wash it off, usually after the mascara is a little older and drier, thus flakier. Hmmmmmm!

And I've been wondering if maybe, in part, I was reacting to "bad" deodorants…. I could never find one that worked and ultimately resorted to spritzing with vinegar and using an essential oil for scent. But then I found Desert Essence and it works and I smell good and hmmmmmm…..

So, although not confirmed, I do have to think that this may be what is going on.

  3. Thank you for sharing this post! you always have great insights and reviews and information to share!

I am now a fan of Green Beaver on FB and will be following them and their products! 🙂

  4. Krysten H says

I was getting mystery fevers and a nurse asked if I was sure my makeup and lotions were gluten-free. I checked and my hand lotion had oats in it, my mascara had wheat germ oil in it, my lip balm did, too, and that may have explained why my eyelids got all red and puffy when I changed brands. I only use gf makeup and shampoo now, but so hard to find shampoos!

    • I have found luck with Garnier products. From the ingredient list they *appear* to be GF and I also i have never had a reaction to them.

Hope this helps. I know how hard it is find GF beauty products 🙁

I've had reactions to personal care products, but never considered that the problem might be gluten. I've been eating gluten-free for about 4 years now but still have skin irritation frequently. Maybe it's time to try g-free personal care too?

    hugzeke@gmail.com

  7. Sounds good !!

  8. While I have not had any reactions to personal care products I am in the same 'better safe than sorry' camp as you. I've been very particular about our personal care products for a few years but got even more diligent after being diagnosed with Celiac. These products look terrific.

  9. Christine says

I have not had a gluten (or food allergy) reaction to a personal care product, at least not that I know of. I have recently switched to organic shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and lotion; old school plant-based bar soap instead of anti-bac for hand soap and body wash; and will be switching to a fluoride free toothpaste once my current tube is gone. I like the idea of avoiding harsh chemicals, and I find these products dry my skin and hair out a lot less than the "normal" products. None of my new products have anything close to wheat, corn or oat products in the ingredients (and I can understand the ingredients!) Though they aren't marketed gluten free.

  10. Christine says

I like Green Beaver on Facebook. I would really like to try their products since you are the second person to give them a glowing review.

  11. This past winter I started having severe itching and wondered if I was reacting suddenly to the gluten in hair/skin products so I switched to gluten free. The itching subsided so I have to believe it was related. I did find out Costco's Kirkland shampoo, conditioner and bar soap are gf – which is a big cost savings.

    • I had purchased Kirtland Shampoo from Costco then read that it contain wheat oil…

      • Hi Mary,

I checked my shampoo and conditioner from Costco and it does not contain wheat oil and says gluten free right on the front of the bottle. It is the Kirkland Signature Professional Salon Formula brand.

  12. I'm pretty sure I've had reactions to non-GF products in the past. I used to break out in rashes sometimes from some of the products and have definitely had a few issues with makeup etc. I've been pretty careful for the past few years to make sure I use GF products to go along with my GF diet. 🙂

  13. I also liked Green Beaver on Facebook

  14. And I posted a link to this contest on Facebook. 🙂

  15. Emme Bozone says

Sadly, I've had one a lot of reactions to health care items. I was recently diagnosed with a wheat allergy (and my Celiac panel was uncertain) so I stray away from it all! Generally my lips break out to numerous lip balms and my skin breaks to a lot of products :/ I'm still trying out new products to not get a reaction 🙁 These products look awesome!

  16. Karen Grdina says

After going gluten free, I tried my hair dye I had always used and I was dizzy for two days after. I looked at the box and it did contain

    wheat.

  17. I have had many reactions to personal care products… but my daughter's reactions were much worse… it created this rash… that turned scaly… and itched… it was a relief to know that gluten caused it and we just needed to avoid in in products… easier said than done. I am hoping to win this to try something cheaper than Lush… lol

  20. I've just stopped using my hair conditioner because it contains wheat products. I forgot it when I went on holidays for a week and I noticed I felt much better. When I got back I tried to figure out what was different, and that stood out. So, I've stopped using it and felt better.

  21. I would love to try their products. I'm still working on finding safe foods. HBA will come next, even faster if I win!

    Thanks Heidi

  22. I have not had a reaction to beauty products, but my daughter and granddaughter have many times.

  23. I used to get itchy eyelids and lips before switching to GF products/make up. I'm excited to find another brand, esp with so many kids' products – my kids haven't had a bubble bath in a year – they miss the bubbles!

  24. I am newly diagnosed and am still trying to find areas gluten is sneaking in! Body/personal care items are options I haven't given much thought to, but will now! I am very strict in my diet but still have "bad" days. Perhaps I've discovered why now!

  25. I've had dry patches on my skin for years that improved after going gluten free but didn't disappear. I checked my bath soap and didn't find anything "obvious" that would be causing the problem but changed it any way. I've noticed a difference in just a week. I would love to try Green Beaver products! I love crandberry and all there products sound wonderful!

  26. These sound awesome! While I don't think I have reacted to any of my personal care products, I am definitely still learning what all I do react to! Would love to try these out

  27. Elizabeth says

I recently switched to all gluten free, paraben free, silicone free products and my scalp is much happier!

  28. I have always used GF products for myself because I'm ultra paranoid but my two little ones (who aren't Celiacs) I didn't think too look at the ingredients were. At one point I started getting sick on and off for about a month and couldn't figure out why – then I read the label for their products and two out of the three of them had wheat. Switched them out for something GF and have never had a problem since. I have never heard of Green Beaver before but hope to try it out!

  29. I've been having a lot of hair loss. I've often thought of the possibilty of ingestion from rinsing out hair dye. My shampoo is gf…so I know it couldn't be a reaction from that. I think your right about avoiding gluten all together. Personal products like lotion can easily transfer from hands to food.

  33. I am Gluten Intolerant and my youngest daughter (3 yrs old) has Celiac. We found out about both of our diagnoses about 2 months ago. It has been a struggle to not croscontaminate, but we are making it work.

I would love a chance for my daughter and I to try these products. If we win or not I think I will have to look into them 🙂

  39. As a recently diagnosed celiac I am just sorting through everything. I still experience cramps and am beginning to suspect personal care products – lipstick in particular. Glad to see this company!

  40. I was recently diagnosed with Celiac so I have gotten my diet to be 100% gluten free, but haven't looked into the personal care products. However, samples of gluten free products would be helpful in making the switch.

  47. I don't think I've had a reaction to any personal products i've used. However, I have been trying to find good natural products that I like. Shampoo and conditioner seem to be the hardest to find that work well for me. And it can get expensive trying out new products that don't do the job. I'd love to win this package so I can try a new product without spending more money.

  48. Before I was diagnosed with Celiac, I had itchy, dry skin. I haven't been labeled with any kind of skin problem related to celiac, but as soon as I started using gf personal care products, my skin became normal again (as normal as possible in dry NM!!!).

I am sooo excited to learn about a new product line to try – I am ready to rotate from the line I use (and like)- change it up a bit!

I like Green Beaver on facebook!!!

  49. How exciting to learn about these products Heidi! No gluten reactions here, but I'm always looking for sensitive skin, natural products that don't contain dairy or any harsh ingredients. Since I was severely allergic when young, my skin is beyond sensitive now, and my readers are always looking for products like these.

  50. Yes, I had a reaction to shampoo and conditioner, I started breaking out really bad throughout my scalp and around my hair line. I eventually decided to look at the ingredients and both shap. and cond. contained wheat germ. I immediately stopped using it and my skin cleared up right away.

  54. I used to get a rash on my eye lids from my shampoo until I switched brands to a GF brand.

I have used the Green Beaver brand of kids sunscreen all summer with no problems. The kids like as it smooths on fast and they don't have to sit still long. It is a little greasy though until it soaks in.

I like Green Beaver on FB.

  55. I am glad to hear about these products for kids, personally I use Alterna products for my hair which is GF from JCPenney Salon, but I always wonder about the melaleuca products I use for the rest of the house/body and especially on my granddaughters. Melaleuca follows the idea of the molecules being too large etc but like you said what about what is left on our hands! Thank you so so much for these GF products that I can get for my husband and I and also for the granddaughters.

  56. I've been having sporadic "celiac attacks" and I assumed it was cross contamination eating out. I've imposed a GF zone in my apartment that even my cat has to abide by. I never even thought to check items that don't go directly in my mouth.

  57. I've never had an outright reaction, but I have suspected shampoos and chapsticks before. 🙁

  63. I think it's really neat that Green Beaver is dedicated to GF products! I don't know if I have reacted to anything on my skin but I wouldn't be surprised if I unknowingly have to something like lip gloss.

  64. I did have a problem with my conditioner. I am using something else now that is Gluten-free but I am not thrilled with is. Hopefully this brand will help. Where do you but it?

  65. I did have a problem with my conditioner. I am using something else now that is Gluten-free but I am not thrilled with is. Hopefully this brand will help. Where do you buy it?

  66. Christina says

Liked it on Facebook! (Thank you for the great post – I will take a closer look at my personal hygiene products now!!)

  67. Rebecca S says

Since my son is only 3, it's hard to say, but at the same time, since he's 3, I can pretty much guarantee most personal care products will end up in or near his mouth! So I'm pretty vigilant about GF personal care products. I noticed in the ingredients I checked out on a couple of these products from Green Beaver, that they contain xanthan gum. My son is super sensitive to corn…are you able to use products with xanthan gum? I haven't chanced it since I discovered the corn problem.

  68. Very careful about products so don't usually react. Some of them in the past that I thought were causing an allergic reaction could have been because of gluten. I am interested in Green Beaver products. I do know that I react to fragrances so only use fragrance free products. Thanks

  69. Brandy H. says

I have never had a reaction – YET! And have honestly never thought about it! I cant use most of Aveno's oatmeal products, makes sense now!

  70. Luckily I have never had a reaction to beauty products containing gluten.

  71. I have always had problems with using anything on my face. Now I wonder, because it was before i was diagnosed, it that was the problem all along.

  72. My daughter did get sick when she was first diagnosed from using lipgloss. We have been very careful since then to avoid gluten in every single thing we use.

  73. I like green beaver on fb!

  74. I do believe I've had a reaction. My scalp was constantly itchy, even if I had just washed it. I switched to a gluten-free shampoo and conditioner and suddenly, my scalp no longer itched. I assumed it was the gluten that was causing it – I'm still figuring this all out. I've been gluten-free (to the best of my ability) for about three months even though I haven't tested positive for any allergy.

  75. MamaKate says

I don't think I've ever reacted, but my sensitivities to gluten are sneaky and tough to quantify (foggy brain, achy knees, low mood). We have been gluten free for a number of years now, before I realized my sensitivities to gluten.

That being said…I have NO doubt that it would affect me and my family!

  76. Heidi,

I don't know for sure that I've had a reaction caused by a gluten-y skin care product, but I've tried hard to avoid them since going GF. Even so, I've had many gluten reactions to unknown sources, so I'm not sure how to tell. That's one of the frustrating things about celiac disease that it's so hard to pin down a connection between cause and effect.

    These products look lovely!

  77. I am still reacting to something but I don't know what…..my personal care products are the next thing on my list to workover so I would love to win this!

  78. I shared the link on fg but don't know how to tag you:)

  79. I suspect my son and I are reacting to products. We both are finding it harder and harder to get through a bottle of shampoo, etc. before we have some adverse reaction.

  80. I think I had a reaction after I used some products in my friends shower, I am pretty aware of what I use. It is really my daughter who has more reactions with rashes, etc.

  81. Love this! Just liked on Facebook!

  82. My DD was just diagnosed w/celiac, and I am going off gluten too for a while to be her "g-free buddy." Never knew about personal care products. Now following on Twitter!

  83. Michelle Armstrong says

I have never had a reaction that I am aware of, but very interesting to consider for myself & my daughter.

  84. Bonnie Budd says

Yes I react and so does my daughter. We only use GF products. This line looks amazing!

Great contest! I completed all 4 bonus entries too! Hope everyone hears about this great new line of products!

  85. Not that I can prove – I seem to have a lot of new allergies popping up on top of the wheat/gluten. Its hard to know what exactly caused what. I've been wanting to try a GF shampoo and conditioner to see if it makes a difference, but small-town USA doesn't have much of a supply and demand so its impossible to find.

  86. I haven't that I know of.

  87. I liked Green Beaver on FB.

  88. i have had so many bad reactions one including losing all my eyelashes! it was so painful and i dont wish it on anyone 🙁 … i am always looking for new products to try that are safe for me. i have been wanting to try green beaver for a while but haven't found it where i live yet i would love to win this 🙂

I have not personally had a reation to gluten. My son has been diagnosed autistic and I have taken him off gluten and milk products. I try to keep all gluten products out of the home so he is not exposed or might possible get into any gluten.

  94. I liked Green Beaver on FB and am looking forward to trying their products.

  96. I'm not sure if I've had a reaction to any products, but I've been paying close attention to hopefully figure it out!!

  100. I believe I was having repeated reactions to a lip balm but didn't put 2 and 2 together until I forgot to use it a couple days in a row!!! Gone were the pains and the bathroom trips as well as the fatigue and irritability!!!! I did some research and saw some info about gluten in beauty products! This info should be more widely available and labelled properly!

  101. I like green beaver on Facebook 🙂

  102. These products sound great! I have not had a reaction to pcp's containing gluten, that I am aware of. I do have sensitive skin, though, and have had reactions to some products. I just do not know what it was that I reacted to. Thanks for the opportunity to try this line! 🙂

Unfortunately, yes!! I've always worn mascara since I can remember and I'm 28, and never really noticed that the brands I were using were causing me major headaches, until I stopped and switched to more natural ones this past year, that do not contain gluten. My headaches have pretty much went away! I stay away from lotions et cetera with gluten in them too. I have 3 boys ages 6, 4, and 1, with my oldest being blind and autistic, it is very important that we stay away from things with gluten and harmful chemicals in them, as well it seems to bother my 4 year old. So, it would be great to try these products! I am still searching for exceptional gluten-free natural products, especially toothpaste!!!!

  106. I've never had a reaction that I know of, but stopped using body products with gluten years ago.

  107. Shared link on FB. Thanks!

  108. I've had reactions to shampoos & conditioners that have gluten, i usually end up with itchy bumps all over my scalp so much so that i start wondering if i have lice from the itchiness! i am also glad that they have flouride free toothpaste! toothpastes high in flouride seem to make the skin in my mouth start peeling off! its not as scary as it seems just Really annoying! so glad you made this post!!

  118. I feel like certain toothpastes make my teeth more sensitive. Would love to try this!

  119. Yes. Unfortunately I used a shampoo that contained gluten and only realized it after my head started to get incredibly sore shortly after using it.

I was using an expensive shampoo for hairloss. I told my husband I felt like my hair was falling our worse, but thought it “must be in my head”. After being diagnosed with Celiac, I checked all of my beauty products, sure enough, my shampoo contained wheat! I have changed shampoo and even the sores on my head have healed up. Now I am just really hoping that my hair will come back!

  122. Toni Nelson says

I am not celiac just sensitive to wheat/gluten and I was itchy for like a week and couldn't figure out why turns out the new body wash I was using had wheat in it

  123. I don't believe I have had a reaction to personal care products. I became gf with food over 2 years ago because I found out through a blood test that I have celiac disease and I was getting sick all the time after eating. Now, I do not get sick anymore! I would love to try these products and be able to go gf with my personal care products as well. And I would like my boys to, also.

Wow! We’re just new to the scene for Gluten free. My son has really bad eczema which our naturopath feels is probably due to dairy and gluten sensitivities. We’re still in the process of figuring it all out. But I had no idea that there may be gluten in his bath products or other type things. I’m going to have to do some more research. We did purchase Green Beaver sunscreen for our kids for this summer though. I was very pleased with it. I just wish it was a bit cheaper!

I have a horrible reaction to almost every lipstick/lip gloss out there. My lips actually begin to peel and crack within hours of using it. I would love to try something that would actually give my lips some color.

Great idea to have gluten free products for self care. Speaking of reactions, My son volunteers at a kids camp, he called one night, and said, I coming home to shower, I got really dirty. He walks in the door, covered in white powder. flour! He shared, the camp had filled socks full of flour and it is a game when they then hit the kids with the flour filled socks like snakes. My facial reaction said it all. So much energy invested in keep gluten flour away from the kids, and he comes home covered in flour. I am thankful he knew to come right home and get it off. I guess it can be a popular game at camp.

Thank you to Green beaver for their products and bringing about awareness.

  132. Yes, I have had reactions to personal care products. My doctor (at that time) had told me that I didn't need to worry about care products. Yet I had been on a strick (extremely) careful (as in reading everything over and over again) diet – and I was having set-backs often. I finally decided to be my own doctor and remove the products – I called many companies in search of a product that was truly GF – at that time it was some of the Burts Bees brand. But companies are always changing and it would be so nice to have a product that can be trusted – reviews like this really make a difference –

  135. This is interesting that even gluten shows up in beauty products, thanks for the info.

  136. I use very few products since I have very sensitive skin and because I don't wear makeup on a daily basis. However, I also have very dry skin, so I have tried countless moisturizers and healing creams. Since I also have environmental allergies and can get rashes on my hands and feet just from touching the ground (yes, digging in the sand at the beach with my son can result in intense itching for a week or more!), it's really hard to say whether or not I have reacted to these moisturizers or creams. However, I do suspect that these products cause or exacerbate my rashes. For example, Burt's Bees coconut foot cream should be moisturizing, but I swear my skin get dryer and the rashes get worse when I use it.

  137. I've not had a reaction to gluten in personal care products that I know of, but I have switched to all natural care products and noticed a difference in my overall health – and I love Green Beaver! 🙂

  141. I never thought really how much wheat/gluten in personal care products can affect someone. I will now pay attention and see how it affects my daughters and I. thanks for the info!

  142. Is it too late to enter?? I would LOVE to try some of these products for me and my daughter!! I'm not sure if I've ever had a reaction. I am gluten free for 6 months now and still improving healthwise. I have been making a lot of my own products to avoid the gluten and other bad chemicals but would be so happy to stop doing that if I found something that worked for us. My 3yo has a food intolerance (I suspect dairy) that causes her to react terribly to any conventional personal care products. I have spent a lot of money sampling different organic/natural products for her. THese sound like they might work well for both of us!!
