But before I give you the giveaway details, please allow me to tell you about this wonderful book!

Mommy, What Is Celiac Disease? has a refreshingly positive message throughout and the pictures are simply stunning.  Katie began writing the book when one of her twin daughters, Morgan, was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2008, just a few months after Katie herself was diagnosed with celiac.

Morgan, the inspiration for the little girl in the book, is a silent celiac, meaning she had no obvious physical symptoms to indicate something very serious was occurring inside her little body.  Morgan was only diagnosed after Katie’s doctor suggested she have her twin daughters screened (to read more of Katie and Morgan’s story, click here).

I read the book from two perspectives.  One, as the celiac mom of a celiac child and the other, as a little girl who had silent celiac disease too, but wasn’t lucky enough to be diagnosed at such a young age, before the more serious health consequences had a chance to grab hold of me.  Oh how I wish I could have been as lucky as the little girl in this book! 😀

The story unfolds as Mother and daughter are taking a walk in the park on a beautiful autumn day.  Mommy needs to tell her little girl she has just been diagnosed with celiac disease and that life is going to be changing just a bit.  Without skipping a beat, mom comfortingly reassures her daughter that everything is going to be okay, as she creatively explains what celiac disease is and how gluten hurts her little body even if it doesn’t make her look or feel sick when she eats it.  Mom goes on to emphasize all the wonderful aspects that a major lifestyle change like this can bring, like having fun in the kitchen!

What I liked most though about this unique new book for kids with celiac, is how Katie touches on a very important issue, one that is so near and dear to my heart, the importance of inclusion and support from our loved ones. Katie offers some GREAT advice for family and friends of a newly diagnosed child, whom she refers to as ‘Supporters,’ on her website and I think it is a must-read for everyone, click here to go directly to the page.

I read the book to my gluten-free kiddos and I could tell by the look in my 7 year old’s eyes, and the questions it prompted from him, that the book helped Sam better understand how gluten affects his body (he loved how Katie illustrated what the small intestine looks like!).

  34. Jennifer R. says

I would love to win this giveaway because I work at an early intervention program that provides services to kids with developmental disabilities, many who are GF due to autism or celiac/gluten intolerance. I am gluten intolerant, and I know it’s hard enough to deal with eating GF as an adult. I always feel really bad for the kiddos that have to deal with it, and many families that live in this rural area are low income and don’t have access to transportation to get food at the nearest Sprouts or Whole Foods which are 40 miles away. I’d love to give this to a family who really needs it this Christmas!

  35. I have a four year old son who suffers from a gluten intolerance as well as several other food allergies and this looks like a wonderful boook to share with him and his little brother. He oftern asks me why he can't be like other kids…maybe this book would provide him with a bit more understanding and he could also share it with his friends. Again love love love your blog!

  36. I'd like to win to try new stuff!

  37. followed @adventuresGFmom & @KatieChalmers on twitter.

posted link on twitter page mentioning giveaway! 🙂

  38. I'd like to win this giveaway because I'm recently diagnosed with Celiac and I live in an extremely remote area. I've got two girls who are gf because of their genetic predisposition to autoimmune diseases and I'd love to try some new things! Thanks for the opportunity!

  39. I'd love to win because I haven't tried a bunch of these products yet.

I would love to read this book as well as read to my 7 yr old.

    Thanks

  41. What a wonderful resource this book would be for a child! This subject is complicated even for adults to understand. I'm so glad I follow your blog, Heidi, because you've helped me to be aware of so much more than I knew before…and where else would I find a glutadoodle???

  42. I'd like to win because I'm newly diagnosed and still learning about what products are out there and which are the best!

  43. I would love to win this giveaway. There are sooo many reasons. For me, I want the resources. There have been 5 people in my family that has been diagnosed with CD and we are all trying to learn and support each other. Getting the book would be amazing. We could pass them back and forth. And especially for little Allison who is having the hardest time understanding why she can't have certain things at her preschool, I feel like the children's book would be ideal.

  44. I'd like to win this giveaway so I can sample new gluten-free treats before buying them in the store 🙂 *Thanks* for the giveaway!

  45. I would like to win this contest because as a fairly new gluten free dieter, I have a hard time finding products that taste good and recipes.

I'll probably buy the book anyway but freebies are always great. I'm also curious about several of the products. I don't buy many packaged goods because of their cost and leeriness (through 20 years of experience) that they will be worth it.

At the close of the giveaway, each comment box has it's own unique number. The random number generator will give me a number and the winner will be the person with the corresponding comment box number.

      Sorry for the inconvenience!

  79. Colleen Garringer says

I would like to win a gift bag so I can try the goodies out on my 3-year old grandaughter who has Celiac's. We almost lost her last year….she was hospitalized…. "failure to thrive"…severely mal-nurished. Finally they pinpointed the problem – Celiacs. Now she is doing fantastic because we stick to a very strict diet. But…being only 3 years old….she is very picky about food so her options are limited. I really want to introduce her to some tasty gluten free foods but….that's hard to do. Your sampler would really help. Thanks for this opportunity to win a bag@

  80. I'd love to win all this great stuff to help stock my pantry, as well as get me prepared for helping my future kids through the transition I'm sure they'll be faced with someday. What an awesome giveaway!

I would like to win this gift bag for my 3 year old daughter. She was diagnosed with Celiac disease at 2 after spending 5 days at the children's hospital being failure to thrive. We went home on a feeding tube because she stopped eating due to the pain food caused her. Now that she is totally gluten free she is doing great, I feel the book "Mommy, what is Celiac Disease?" would be perfect for her right now! Thanks for this opportunity!

  88. I “liked” Mommy, What is Celiac Disease on Facebook.

  89. I'd like to win because four of the people in my house have to be GF and this would be a tremendous blessing to us in teaching and eating!

    Thanks for the chance

  90. Clarissa Shackelford says

I submitted the social networking things yesterday, but wanted to add the "why I would like to win" entry today.

I am newly diagnosed with Celiacs. I am in my 40s. I know a diagnosis at my age is less common. I had mild symptoms most of my life, so it was misdiagnosed my entire life (as far as my mom can tell I had symptoms when I was a baby, but they were clueless… finally rice cereal helped me put weight on! lol)

Anyway, I have a little daughter. I am not sure if she will ever get a diagnosis becuase we are now a gluten free household. Hopefully she will never have to suffer the symptoms of Celiac if she does have it… since she' being raised to avoid gluten altogether.

The book sounds like a great educational tool, and we are always seeking out new gluten free treats! I just made my first gluten free cake over the Thanksgiving Holiday and I am feeling like a real person again! There is life beyond those 5 "safe" foods I found to begin with! 🙂

Thanks for the fun contest and now I have a lot of new blogs to explore!

Winning this giveaway would be amazing, because it would give me the opportunity to try some new products that I otherwise wouldn't be able to.

  94. I would like to win this giveaway because I would love a copy of this book and all the contents of the prize giveaway. 154. for the Gluten-Free Holiday Giveaway Galore x10. I am really hoping to win the contest because I have a 17 year old daughter that was just diagnosed allergic to wheat. She is so beautiful but was struggling mentally and physically to the point of me not knowing how to help her. We are so thankful to finally know what was causing it. After taking her off all gluten, her face is clear and bright and her smile has returned. You can see pictures of her on my blog. http://whatsfordinner-momwhatsfordinner.blogspot…. I have always baked and cooked, but learning all about gluten-free is new for me. This win would be a big boost in supplying what my daughter needs to stay healthy.

  174. I'm glad to hear about this book, My 5 year old was dx 2 years ago after I was. He had seemed fine until we went gluten free at home and then my Ex was still feeding him gluten, he suddenly started having symptoms after visits with Daddy. We have struggled against a lot of misinformation from the Daddy camp and I think this book would be so helpful for my little guy!

  188. Hi,

I just read the article about Katie's book that was printed in The Buffalo News. I live in a small town about 30 miles south of Buffalo. My youngest daughter is 7 and was just diagnosed with celiac disease in November. When she was 2, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She has been on an insulin pump since she was 4 and is doing great! She had no symptoms of celiac, but, her routine blood work done by her diabetes doctor showed the markers for celiac. After the upper endoscopy, we knew for sure. We met with a nutritionist, and things are going very well. It is more work for sure, but it helps us to all be healthier! Our other 3 children had blood work done to test for celiac…and my second daughters(she'll be 11 on 01-01-11) results came back positive. She will be meeting with a GI doctor on Dec. 22nd, I'm sure this will be to schedule an upper endoscopy. She cried at first when we told her, but then realized this is something that would bring her and her sister closer together. I would love to win this giveaway to surprise my girls with some goodies!

  189. My daughter is 5 and has celiac. She is getting used to having to bring a cupcake and pizza to parties and not being able to eat or play with things other kids have.

I follow adv of a gluten free mom on facebook I've liked the book on Facebook and I shared a post on my wall about the book as well 🙂

  190. My 7 year old was diagnosed with Celiac disease last January (was in the hospital Dec 28th diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes)

She is a terribly picky eater and I stopped working this past year to manage her diseases. I would love for her to be able to try all of these products!

    Merry Christmas!
