Udi’s Gluten Free Bagels & A Fun Breakfast Treat for GF Kids

A few weeks ago, while on one of my rare grocery adventures (I kid you not, I get lost in label land)! Anyhoo, after a few hours of doing the “Gluten-Free Nancy Drew” thing, I remembered that I needed to pick up some more bread. When I approached the freezer case to get my beloved Udi’s GF Bread, I just about fainted. There they were. The ever elusive, softly whispered, government conspiracy cover-up… UDI’S BAGELS!!

I was so excited, I bought 5 packages!

As soon as I got home, I had to have one, with cream cheese!

The first thing I noticed as I pulled a bagel out of the bag… these are REALLY BIG bagels! They are so big, that I could only eat 1/4 of it! The other thing I noticed is that they do not really taste like the gluten bagels I remember. They are good mind you, but they are not the boiled bagels that I think of; with the crunchy crust and chewy inside. To me, they are the same as Udi’s great gluten-free bread, only in the shape of a bagel (which is a big plus, especially for a 6 year old)! Sam loves the bagels, because they make him feel “normal.” Know what I think these are? A GREAT gluten-free hamburger bun, only with a hole in the middle! Just place a piece of lettuce at the top to keep the condiments contained and wa-la!

Told you they were big! Sam will not eat lettuce on his burger, but it wasn't too messy!

I got this idea from Disney’s Family Fun Magazine, UFO Breakfast Treats!

That's my boy, thinking "outside the box!"

Why can't he be this "neat" with chocolate??

Neither one of my boy’s will eat a hard boiled egg (yet they love egg salad??).

I hope you have a happy Easter or I hope you’ve had a good Passover!

((Hugs)),

Heidi

  1. Love that pic of your son eating that worlds biggest bagel ~ lol. That is a very large bagel indeed. Is Udi's bagels a whole foods store product?

  2. Lisa,

The bagels are HUGE! You definitely get your money's worth, LOL! A 4-pack of Udi's bagels cost about $5.00.

Udi's is not a Whole Foods store product, they are a bakery out of Denver. My local Whole Foods carries it, as well as a few other stores in the Albuquerque area, like Vitamin Cottage and R. Downs.

There is not a better GF bread out there, and I have not been able to make any that comes even close to the moist, fluffy, bendable, shelf stable, "real" bread, that Udi's has mastered. I cried, laughed and danced a jig the first time I had it. Ahhh yes, Udi's GF bread "had me at hello!"

Click here: http://www.udisglutenfree.com/stores for their store locator, to see if their products are sold in your area. If not, you can order online here: http://udisglutenfree.elsstore.com/

My Whole Foods will occasionally put the bread on sale for about $3.00/loaf so I stock up! Like 30 loaves at a time. 😀 This is when I am thankful for my Deep Freezers!!

  3. OMG – I can't wait to try these GF bagels! And I really like your hamburger bun idea. They actually look better than most prepared GF hamburger buns I have seen on thew market. Thanks as always for the info and ideas!

  4. You do such a nice job Heidi! Thanks for being you and sharing your life with us!

  5. Oh my goodness! I tried Udi's whole grain bread for the first time a couple of weeks ago and LOVE it! I have asked my local store if they will stock the bagels so it was nice to read your feedback on them. Now I'm excited to get them and try them as a hamburger bun. YAY! If anyone has a Fruitful Yield store in their area they do carry Udi's products now and I have to tell you all that the muffins are absolutely WONDERFUL!!! There's blueberry and lemon streussel. YUM YUM

I too LOVE Udi's bagels. Every time I eat one, I wonder how they got it so close to the real thing. I also thought about using it as a hamburger bun, because the other varieties just crumble hopelessly & taste like dried cardboard.

BUT – I'm concerned about the way that my Whole Foods stocks UDI's products. Are yours kept in the gluten free freezer section? My store stocks them on the shelf, which greatly reduces their shelf life. I got nauseous from eating Udi's blueberry muffins. I also called the store's bakery manager's attention to visibly molded lemon muffins on the shelf. Every time I buy the bread, I don't want to re-freeze it to compromise its moisture, so it molds after a few days.

How are other stores stocking it?

    • Hi Kirsten!

My local Whole Foods does both, they have a table in the bakery area with Udi's products and they also keep some stocked in the freezer. I haven't had a problem with mold yet, but that is certainly something the store needs to be mindful of! I buy all of my Udi's products out of the freezer and I freeze them when I get home, but I also buy in bulk when they are on sale, 20 – 30 loaves at a time (I have 2 deep freezers)! I have an unnatural fear of Udi's disappearing and I will be left without bread, LOL! You are correct though, freezing does compromise the moisture a bit, but even then, it is still better to us than anything else. When I thaw Udi's, I always do so in a sealed Ziploc bag and that helps somewhat.

The Udi's bagels do make great hamburger buns, but they are so big and filling, we often have open faced hamburgers to reduce waste. 🙂

My famiy loves Udi's GF bagels! Recently we have been addicted to the cinnamon rasin type, and when I say we I mean my youngest who usually protests anything gluten-free 🙂 What a great idea to use them as buns. Thanks Heidi for sharing, as always!

    Cheers!
